When you buy a new car, you are probably envisioning all the places you are going to take it and test it out on. From your favorite lookout to showing it off in the city on a night out, there is a lot to look forward to. The only problem is that often when you buy a new car, you don't have your real license plates yet. Generally, when you drive home with your car you get temporary license plates that are made out of paper. Considering that paper is particularly susceptible to the elements your car will be driving through, it makes sense you should try to protect it.

Instead of not driving your car until your full license plates come in, there is a simple solution: a temporary license plate bag. These are simple bags that are designed to fit around the license plate and they allow you to attach it to your car so that it can be properly displayed, as required by law. These might not look especially pretty, but they do the job when nothing else will really allow you to keep driving your new car before the plates come in. Often they come in large packs, so you can swap out the bags when they become too dirty.
How Much Do They Cost?
Because they are simple plastic bags most temporary license plate bags cost only a few bucks for a pack of 10 or even 20. Some stores will sell them one at a time, and you may even be given one at the dealer before you drive off, but it always pays to have backups ready. The plastic can rip and when you notice it you want to be able to have a replacement on hand and not have to drive, potentially through the rain, to get a new one.
Is It Legal?
As long as your license plate is unobscured there is nothing illegal about using a temporary license plate bag to shield it from the rain; in fact, most state and local governments would encourage it. Just make sure the tint on the bag is not too much that it will affect the visibility, or you are liable to be pulled over by the cops if they see it. Also, make sure that the bag has a good seal on it, or if it doesn't, that you have enough tape to keep it closed in the winds that you generate while driving.
